Sally Mason cannot believe her eyes when she sees a giant pink Portuguese Man of War floating in the canal adjacent to her Florida house. Looking through her binoculars, the pink Man-O-War reveals itself to be a dead woman, her neighbor, Evelyn Sandborn. It soon becomes obvious that Evelyn did not die of natural causes. As a retired marine biologist, Sally is instantly intrigued having spent her life solving the puzzles of aquatic life. Problems and mysteries intrigue her and to her husband’s dismay, she is often embroiled in detective work—some dangerous.
The circle of suspects is large and includes Evelyn’s children since, as a neighbor described the dead woman, “Evelyn has been sent into our neighborhood with the strict proviso to make herself so unpalatable as to let all of us shine in Christian glory.
As Sally unravels the circumstances of the murder, her life and that of her husband, are repeatedly threatened. She is aided in her sleuthing by Samantha Brown, a police dispatcher and Sam’s boss Harry Margolis. Also assisting her are Mr. Petrovich, who saves her from an anaconda, and other neighbors.
After a terrific struggle with members of the Mexican drug cartel, Sally lives to connect the last threads of the mysterious web.
